Substance Use & Addiction Treatment

Substance use disorders involve harmful or compulsive use of alcohol, drugs, or other addictive substances. Treatment focuses on stopping use, managing cravings and withdrawal, and rebuilding healthy functioning in daily life.

Key Components of Treatment

1. Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Detailed evaluation of type of substance, duration, severity, and impact

  • Screening for co-existing mental health issues (anxiety, depression, trauma)

2. Detoxification (Detox)

  • Medically supervised withdrawal to ensure safety

  • Helps manage symptoms like tremors, seizures, cravings, and anxiety

  • May include medicines such as benzodiazepines (for alcohol), buprenorphine/methadone (for opioid detox)

3. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Used for long-term recovery and craving control.
Common medications:

  • Opioids: Buprenorphine, Methadone, Naltrexone

  • Alcohol: Naltrexone, Acamprosate, Disulfiram

  • Nicotine: Patches, gum, varenicline
